Moxifloxacin

The need-to-know information about Moxifloxacin (Avelox)

Moxifloxacin

Pearls and fun nuggets

1. It treats a lot, but it shouldn’t be your first choice ☝The European Medicines Agency has advised that for pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute exacerbations of COPD, it should only be used when other antibiotics are inappropriate.[19][20]

2. Moxifloxacin increases the risk of tendon ruptures 😳 The U.S. label does not contain restrictions similar to the European label, but a carries a “black box” warning of the risk of tendon damage and/or rupture and warnings regarding the risk of irreversible peripheral neuropathy.[51]

3. Moxifloxacin penetrates deep 🎯 The CSF penetration of moxifloxacin is 70% to 80% in patients with meningitis.[42]

Patient Perspectives

“Unfortunately…..I get pneumonia several times a year….and this drug works!!! The side affects are very harsh…..but….again…it works.”

“I had a strange skin infection in my earlobe– it was swollen, red, hot, and incredibly painful. I was first prescribed a different anti-biotic that did not help and in fact made the infection grow in size. After just 24 hours my ear was less swollen and my symptoms have only improved. I am not finished with the prescription yet but it is so great to finally have some relief.”

“I had shortness of breath and chest pains right side, doctor sent for X-rays. Called next day and told me I had pneumonia of left lung. It’s been 5 days now and I slept throughout the night yesterday for 1st time in a week, chest pains still there but less intense. After 10 days on medicine I am going back for X-rays. So far so good.”
