Fluconazole

The need-to-know information for Fluconazole

Fluconazole

Pearls and fun nuggets

1. Fluconazole is one of the newer anti-fungalsšŸ‘“ It’s a first-generation triazoleĀ antifungal medication. It differs from earlierĀ azole antifungalsĀ (such asĀ ketoconazole) in that its structure contains a triazole ring instead of anĀ imidazoleĀ ring.

2. Fluconazole was patented in 1981 and came into commercial use in 1988.[3]

3. Antifungal resistance can often be a problem šŸ˜¶ Fungal resistance to drugs in the azoleĀ class tends to occur gradually over the course of prolonged drug therapy, resulting in clinical failure in immunocompromised patients (e.g., patients with advancedĀ HIVĀ receiving treatment forĀ thrushĀ or esophagealĀ CandidaĀ infection).[13]

4. Pregnant women should probably avoid this drug šŸ˜³ One study showed that women using fluconazole during pregnancy have a 50% higher risk of spontaneous abortion.[26]

Patient Perspectives

“Yes … men get yeast infections too , from their partner who also had one while being intimate . So I get one and my partner got 2 of the pills and within 2 hrs I saw a difference it’s been 2 days and it’s just about fully gone . I didn’t experience any side effects from the pill , I took it without food . It says is an easy pill to take “

“I got a yeast infection for the first time. Holy moly those things are horrible. Be patient. It works differently for everyone. I did see relief the first day. And more relief everyday. I felt normal after a week. I would take this again if I had to. No side effects for me.”

Ā

“I had a yeast infection for a few days, then decided to ask my OBGYN for some help. She prescribed me Fluconazole, 2 pills, 1 every 72 hours. It personally did nothing for me, it made me even more uncomfortable. I know everyone’s body is different. That was just my case with the medication.”
